The doctor, 61 years old, died after being shot during an action in the state of Rio de Janeiro on Sunday (15 March 2026), in Cascadura, north of the capital of Rio de Janeiro. The incident occurred during a police chase that ended with shots being fired at the vehicle she was driving. On social media, government supporters lamented the death.
The Minister of Racial Equality, Anielle Franco, classified the case as “desolate.” According to her, witnesses reported that police officers had mistaken the doctor’s car for that of criminals. “Desolating. Doctor Andréa Marins Dias was shot dead during a police approach in Cascadura”, he stated.
The federal deputy (Psol-RJ) expressed solidarity with the family and criticized the public security policy in the State. “Another life lost because of a security policy that turns entire neighborhoods into war zones,” declared.
The deputy (Psol-RJ) said he had received the news “with deep sadness” and mentioned reports of possible confusion with the doctor’s vehicle.
Federal deputy Marina from MST (PT-RJ) stated that the episode occurred “in yet another action by the PM”.
State deputy Renata Souza (Psol-RJ) also commented on the case and cited witness reports that the car had been mistaken for that of criminals.

In a note sent to Poder360the State Secretariat of Military Police informed that the corporation’s General Inspectorate has initiated a procedure to investigate the incident recorded during the approach in Cascadura.

According to the note, as determined by the commander of the 9th Military Police Battalion (Rocha Miranda), the agents involved were removed from external activity.

According to the Military Police, officers received information that a Corolla Cross model car was involved in robberies in the Cascadura region.
The shooting took place on Palatinado Street, after agents from the 9th Battalion were called. Upon arriving at the scene, they identified what they considered to be the suspect vehicle and began pursuit.
According to the corporation, criminals had shot at the police officers and the car driven by Andrea continued until it stopped on Palatinado Street. When the agents opened the vehicle door, they claim, they found the doctor already dead in the driver’s seat.
