The city of Guimarães is attracting the attention of British tourists, with emphasis on a cable car that connects the city center to the top of Monte da Penha. According to the British newspaper, this infrastructure, with a route of around 1,700 meters, has been identified as one of the city’s most distinctive elements, contributing to its growing visibility among foreign visitors seeking alternatives to more mass destinations.
This international interest comes at a time when the city is reinforcing its presence on the European tourist map. According to the same source, the combination of historical heritage, natural landscape and relatively affordable costs has been highlighted by visitors, who describe the experience as balanced between culture and leisure.
Cable car not expected to reopen
The cable car is, however, out of operation due to technical work. According to the Lusa news agency, the equipment was closed for a “large-scale” intervention, initially scheduled to last two months, with a view to ensuring safety and operational conditions.
Despite this initial schedule, the situation remains unchanged. The publication adds that the expected deadline has already been exceeded and the cable car remains closed, without a new concrete date having been announced for its reopening to the public.
Connection to Penha and views
When operational, the cable car provides a direct connection between the urban center and the top of Monte da Penha. According to the same source, the route allows you to observe the city and the surrounding landscape throughout the climb, offering an expanded perspective of the region.
At the end of the trip is the Penha Sanctuary, one of the main visiting points. The Sun newspaper explains that this building, with modern architecture with art deco influence, constitutes a visual and religious landmark, located in a nature area that attracts visitors throughout the year.
Heritage and history
Guimarães continues to assert itself as one of the most historically relevant cities in Portugal. According to the British publication, it is associated with the birth of D. Afonso Henriques, the country’s first king, a central figure in the formation of national identity.
Guimarães Castle remains a symbol of this past. He cites the same source that the fortress, dating from the 10th century, can be visited by tourists, allowing access to the interior and understanding the historical context in which it emerged.
Prices and local experience
The costs associated with the visit are highlighted as a difference. The newspaper adds that there are references to wines priced between 3.75 and 4 euros, values that contribute to making the experience accessible to a wide audience.
The drinks offer is also mentioned by visitors. According to the same source, the traditional “fino” can be found for around two euros in bars and restaurants, remaining a common option in the northern region.
Gastronomy, environment and access
Local gastronomy is part of the tourist experience, with emphasis on traditional sweets. The Guimarães Torta, prepared with egg yolk, sugar, almonds and gila jam, is one of the specialties available in the city’s pastry shops, with prices around 3 euros.
The urban environment and accessibility reinforce the attractiveness of the destination. According to the same source, Largo do Toural functions as a central meeting point, bringing together cafes and terraces, while its proximity to Porto allows you to reach Guimarães in around 35 minutes by bus, facilitating access for international visitors.
