US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (17) that he “does not need or want” assistance from member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in military operations, following the military alliance’s refusal to participate in attacks against Iran in the Middle East.
“The US has been told by most of our NATO ‘allies’ that they do not want to be involved in our military operation against the terrorist regime in Iran, despite virtually every country agreeing with what we do,” the Republican wrote in Truth Social. According to him, NATO also agrees that Iran cannot possess a nuclear weapon “in any shape or size”.
Trump accused the military alliance of never doing anything for the United States in exchange for the protection offered by Americans. “I’m not surprised by their action, because I’ve always considered NATO, where we spend billions of dollars a year protecting these same countries, as a one-way street – we protect them, but they don’t do anything for us, especially in times of need,” he said.
The American president reiterated previous comments about having “decimated” Iran’s navy, air force, radars and leadership “at all levels.” “They disappeared, never to threaten us, our allies in the Middle East and the world again!” he said.
“Thanks to this military success, we no longer need, or want, assistance from NATO countries – WE NEVER NEEDED IT! The same goes for Japan, Australia, or South Korea. In fact, speaking as President of the United States of America, by far the most powerful country in the world, WE DON’T NEED ANYONE’S HELP!” Trump wrote.
