Iran’s state press confirmed this Tuesday (17) the death of Ali Larijani, the country’s security chief and former president of the Iranian Parliament.
Larijani was one of the most influential figures behind the scenes of the regime, with a long history at the top of Tehran and an important role in the country’s internal and external political articulation. He had already presided over Parliament and ran for President in previous elections.
The confirmation of the death comes amid the escalation of the conflict involving Iran, Israel and regional allies, which has raised geopolitical tension in the Middle East and put pressure on energy markets.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz had said earlier that the Israeli army killed Larijani in a night raid.
According to the information, Gholam Reza Soleimani, head of the Basij force, made up of volunteers from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, was also killed.
The deaths once again dispossess the top leaders of the Iranian theocracy, following the February 28 attack that killed Iran’s then supreme leader, 86-year-old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
