Nursing homes increase prices: monthly price for a single room is more than double the minimum wage

Prices for nursing homes in Portugal rose significantly again in 2025, with average monthly values reaching levels that significantly exceed the national minimum wage, especially in single room options. The most recent data points to a consistent upward trend, which is making access to these answers increasingly demanding from a financial point of view.

This increase in costs arises in a context of strong demand, in which many families face difficulties not only in paying the prices charged, but also in finding available vacancies in a timely manner, which ends up reinforcing the pressure on the entire sector.

Widespread increases in the last year

According to , the price update in 2025 was transversal to the majority of residences for the elderly, reflecting a generalized movement that had already occurred in previous years. This trend accompanies the increase in the operating costs of institutions, which end up being passed on to the amounts charged to users.

According to the same source, around 84.5% of residences increased prices in relation to 2024, and in some cases the increases exceeded 7%. This scenario confirms that these are not one-off adjustments, but rather a broad review of prices charged in the sector.

How much does a home cost?

The prices charged by residences vary significantly, depending on the type of room and services included, but remain high in practically all available options. This variation also reflects differences between regions and the positioning of units in the market.

The newspaper writes that the average cost of a bed in a double room rose by more than 200 euros in one year, now standing at 1,717 euros per month. Still, there are cases where prices can vary between 1,000 and 3,000 euros, depending on the conditions offered.

Single rooms soar

Single room options continue to stand out as the most expensive within senior residences, often being chosen by those seeking greater privacy and comfort, but requiring considerable financial effort.

According to Correio da Manhã, the average price of a single room is currently 1,921 euros per month (more than double the national minimum wage, set at 920 euros), and can reach 3,000 euros in some units. These values place this option well above the national minimum wage, making it unaffordable for most families.

More affordable alternatives

Despite the increases recorded, there are solutions that have slightly lower costs, although they are still far from being considered affordable for the majority of the population. These options often end up being the only viable alternative for many families.

According to the same source, triple rooms have an average cost of 1,482 euros per month, with prices ranging between 750 and 3,000 euros. Still, this price difference does not eliminate the significant weight that these expenses represent on the family budget.

High demand keeps prices under pressure

The evolution of prices cannot be dissociated from the high demand for places in senior residences, which continues to exceed the available supply, contributing to the maintenance of high values throughout the sector.

According to the same source, the difficulty in finding available vacancies and the existence of long waiting lists help to explain why prices continue to rise, in a context in which demand remains constant and installed capacity does not keep pace.
