Two deputies, one substitute and four more for no is something that has some didactic effect on the behavior of parliamentarians who unceremoniously advance the Union Budget.
At least this is what is expected to happen given the minister’s indication that other severe punishments will come, within the scope of the dozens of investigations on the subject that are still being processed in secrecy at the Federal Supreme Court.
Now checking whether their Excellencies will show any sign of change in the treatment they intend to give to the three politicians, notably the two in office. Sentenced to sentences of less than eight years in prison, they have the benefit of the semi-open regime. The law gives them the right to work during the day and retire to prison after work.
In the Legislative Branch there is, however, the ; in theory, by logic and common sense, incompatible with criminal convictions for the purposes of parliamentary activity. We will see if the Chamber will consider socializing with prisoners as normal, if it will consider that they meet the requirements and, therefore, can continue to divide themselves between the plenary and prison.
The case is not unprecedented. In 2017, then federal deputy Celso Jacob was sentenced to seven years and two months for falsifying a public document and irregular dismissal from bidding when he was mayor of Três Rios (RJ). Authorized by the courts to continue his mandate, he ended up being suspended (but not revoked) after intense pressure on the Chamber.

In the current episode, the issue will return to the scene, added to the fact that criminals have taken advantage of the mandate to charge bribes to allocate resources for amendments. It is likely that there will be a reaction and that the proximity of the elections will awaken an appreciation for decorum in the pairs of deputies Josimar Maranhãozinho and Pastor Gil, both from Maranhão.
But it is possible that the conviction will affect the spirit of early protection due to what may come from other investigations lurking in the STF.
