PS threatens to fail the OE if excluded from appointments to the Constitutional

Luis Montenegro welcomes José Luis Carneiro

Senior PS leaders are considering failing the State Budget proposal for 2027 if the PSD excludes them from negotiations for the appointment of three new judges to the Constitutional Court and prefers to work with Chega.

The Socialist Party (PS) admits completely cut off political dialogue with the Government if its proposal for the appointment of a judge to the Constitutional Court (TC) is unsuccessful.

The decision, according to internal sources heard by , had already been taken at the highest level of the party, although has not yet been formalizedawaiting the end of the parliamentary vote.

The topic was at the center of a meeting between the socialist leader, José Luís Carneiro, and the prime minister, Luís Montenegro, held this week in Parliament. For about an hour, the two responsible discussed the impasse in choosing representatives for various external bodies, with special emphasis on the TC. Carneiro warned that the blockade could cause a profound rupture in institutional relations.

At issue is the election of three judges to the TCa process that requires a two-thirds majority of deputies and which has already been successively postponed. The PS claims the right to nominate one of the names, in line with a historical practice of balanced division with the Social Democratic Party (PSD). However, the socialists were surprised to realize that the PSD did not include the name proposed by it in the final list.

For the PSD, the new composition of the TC must reflect the current presentation of forces in Parliament, including the weight of Chega. This position is rejected by the PS, which considers unacceptable the entry of a party that, according to socialists, has positions contrary to constitutional principles.

Carneiro stressed that the issue goes beyond the mere distribution of seats, stating that it is the defense of “fundamental values of democracyThe tension increased with statements from influential PS figures, such as Augusto Santos Silva, who defended a firm opposition if a rapprochement between the PSD and Chega was confirmed.

The political consequences could be significant. The PS admits to reviewing its position in relation to the 2027 State Budget, whose proposal may be at risk. Until now, the socialists had been instrumental in ensuring the stability of the government, including making the previous budget viable.
