Controversy in Chega: party lost 8 councilors in five months

Chega faces a crisis in local power with the departure of eight councilors in just five months. Dissents were recorded in several chambers such as Lisbon, Vila Nova de Gaia, Coimbra, Mirandela, Fundão, Marinha Grande and Funchal.

In just five months, the party lost councilors in several chambersnamely in Lisbon, Vila Nova de Gaia, Coimbra, Mirandela, Fundão, Marinha Grande and Funchal. In total, there were eight dissidents.

In Mirandela, Luís Saraiva didn’t even wait for the inauguration and became independent 11 days after the elections. A similar situation occurred in Marinha Grande, where Emanuel Vindeirinho opted for independence.

In Lisbon, with Bruno Mascarenhas and ended up accepting roles in Carlos Moedas’ executive. In Vila Nova de Gaia, the situation was identical, where António Barbosa became independent and guaranteed the majority to Luís Filipe Menezes’ executive in exchange for positions.

The list of dissent extends to other municipalities. In Coimbra, to local government in the name of exercising a free mandate. In Fundão, Hugo Silva presented the same arguments for leaving Chega and becoming independent.
