The country’s Ministry of Energy says that the electrical system had a total interruption and that protocols have already been activated
The Cuban Ministry of Energy announced on Saturday night (21 March 2026) that the entire island suffered a blackout. The power outage comes at a time when the United States is imposing restrictions on the supply of oil to the country. On Monday (March 16, 2026), 10 million people were without power after the first collapse of the country’s electricity grid.
“The National Electric System suffered a total interruption. Restoration protocols are being implemented”stated
The president (Republican Party) imposed an oil blockade on the country. The situation worsened after the US stopped oil supplies from Venezuela. The country was the island’s main supplier. The US government also threatened to sanction other countries that sell fuel to Cuba, a measure that intensifies economic isolation.
Cuba on Friday (13 March) which began negotiations with the United States government. On Friday (20 March), the country said that any negotiations on its political system or the mandate of President Miguel Díaz-Canel (Communist Party of Cuba, left) in talks with the United States. On the same day, the president of the Island stated that they were preparing for a possible North American one.
