Hélder recalls prejudice for being of gypsy ethnicity: “He was the gypsy’s son…”

Hélder was the participant expelled from ‘Secret Story 10’ at the gala this Sunday, March 22nd. Thus, on Monday morning (23), the health professional was on the program ‘Dois à 10’, talking to Cristina Ferreira and Cláudio Ramos.

When talking about his origins, Hélder ended up remembering the “forbidden love” between his parents, since his biological father is of gypsy ethnicity and his mother is not.

“They ran away, my biological father fled with my mother to Lisbon, they both left the North for Lisbon at the age of 17 with the aim of living together (…). Then, in the meantime, they returned to the nest, with the news that I would be born”he began by saying.

Hélder said that, when he was just two years old, his biological father “disappeared” and only reappeared when his son was 19 years old, remembering that throughout these years he was always labeled as “the gypsy’s son”.

“I live in Celorico de Basto, a small town, everyone knew the story and everyone told me the similarities I had with my father (…) and that generated a certain curiosity in me but, at the same time, that curiosity was put aside when the bad part came, which was “the gypsy’s son”. I went to school and whatever I did (…)”realized.

Hélder admitted that, currently, he is not “ashamed” of his life story, but that it caused him several embarrassments: “I’m not ashamed to say it, but it was a thorn in my side for a long time, that’s why I avoid saying it nowadays because… It created a lot of barriers for me to be what I am today. Doors were closed, friendships were closed (…). I left school and went home and my classmates couldn’t go home with me, at first, because they said the parents wouldn’t let me because they said I was the gypsy son”.

The now former contestant on the 10th edition of ‘Secret Story’ revealed that today he only has a “cordial relationship” with his father: “I know my father exists and we talk”assumed.
