The president (PT) speaks this Sunday (22 March 2026) at the opening of the special high-level session of COP15 (15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Migratory Species), in Campo Grande (MS). It is the first time that Brazil hosts and presides over the conference. The event will be held from March 23rd to 29th.
Watch the event:
The country will maintain the presidency for 3 years, until the next COP. The Pantanal Declaration should be launched this Sunday, which calls on new countries to join the convention – currently with 133 members. Lula sent invitations to heads of state from 18 nations that are not yet part of the initiative.
Over the 3 years of its presidency, Brazil intends to increase the number of signatories, increase the convention’s resources and launch a call for research on migratory species.
Participating in the opening of COP15:
This Sunday’s special session (22 March) will also have the participation of the governor of Mato Grosso do Sul, (PP), Amy Fraenkel, executive secretary of the CMS (Convention on Migratory Species), president of the STJ (Superior Court of Justice), and number 2 of the Ministry of the Environment, which assumes the presidency of COP15.
The event promoted by the UN continues throughout the week, from Monday (23rd March) to Sunday (29th March), at the Rubens Gil de Camillo Convention Center.
