The former governor of Rio de Janeiro Cláudio Castro said this Tuesday (24) “he received with great nonconformity” the . Through a publication on X (formerly Twitter), the former head of the Rio de Janeiro Executive stated that will appeal “and fight until the last resort” to “reestablish” what he considers “a fair outcome to the case”.
“I am fully convinced that I have always governed Rio de Janeiro within the law, with responsibility and absolute commitment to the population,” wrote Castro.
The former governor also “reiterated” his “absolute respect for TSE ministers and due legal process”. “It is important to say that all the accusations raised in the process refer to issues relating to the 2022 electoral period and did not influence the significant vote I received”, he added.
On Monday (23), Castro resigned from the government of Rio de Janeiro to become a pre-candidate for the Senate. To compete, it is necessary to be incompatible with a public position six months before the first round. Despite the removal, the case continued in the Electoral Court.
Castro was accused of abuse of political and economic power in the 2022 elections. In May 2024, the Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) acquitted the former governor and the other accused in the process of alleged irregular hiring at the Rio de Janeiro State Center for Statistics, Research and Training of Public Servants Foundation (Ceperj) and at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ).
According to the Public Electoral Ministry (MPE), Castro had an electoral advantage in recruiting 27,665 peoplewhich generated an expense of R$248 million. The body stated that the decentralization of social projects encouraged the measure.
