Re.Green, by João Moreira Salles, won the event and will have the right to manage 59 thousand hectares in Porto Velho for 40 years
The federal government held this Wednesday (March 25, 2026), at the headquarters of in São Paulo, the concession auction for the Bom Futuro National Forest, located in Porto Velho (RO). The event marks a strategic step towards the green agenda of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, being the first federal concession focused primarily on forest restoration and generation of carbon credits.
The management of the Bom Futuro National Forest was awarded by the company which will have the right to manage an area of 59 thousand hectares for a period of 40 years.
Unlike traditional concessions focused solely on wood management, the Bom Futuro model foresees that the main source of revenue comes from the sustainable use and exploitation of environmental assets and forest products from native species.
Re.Green was co-founded by filmmaker João Moreira Salles and has Armínio Fraga, former president of the Central Bank, on its board. The company was the only bidder in the auction.
The expected investment is R$86.7 million over the 40 years of the contract. The selection criterion adopted was the highest percentage of grant offered to the government, ensuring that the financial benefits of preservation return to public coffers and local communities.
Ownership of the land remains entirely with the Union. The private sector is only granted the right to sustainable use and exploitation of assets and products from native species.
The Minister of the Environment (Rede) and the general director of the Brazilian Forest Service, followed the hammer strike.
carbon credit
Carbon credit is a concept that converts the non-emission of greenhouse gases into a tradable environmental currency. One credit is equivalent to one ton of carbon dioxide that is no longer released into the atmosphere.
The system works as a global economic incentive: companies or projects that manage to capture carbon – through planting forests – or reduce their emissions generate these assets, which can then be sold to industries that have not yet reached their sustainability goals, thus offsetting their environmental impact.
