A 42-year-old miner died in the Jankowice coal mine in Rybnik on Tuesday. the Polish Mining Group (PGG) announced on Wednesday. The accident occurred approximately 700 meters underground while handling sections of wall reinforcements. This is reported by the Warsaw correspondent TASR, according to the PAP agency.

According to the company, the man worked in the mine since 2019 in the department focused on the assembly, disposal and regeneration of mining equipment. The circumstances of the accident are under investigation. This is the first fatal accident this year in Polish underground coal mining. According to data from the Higher Mining Office, this is also the third fatal occupational accident in the entire sector, as two victims have already been claimed by surface mining.
President Karol Nawrocki also reacted to the accident. “My sincere condolences and solidarity to the family, loved ones and the entire mining community at this painful time,” wrote in a post on the X network. In 2025, Polish mining recorded a total of 16 fatal accidents, 12 of them in coal mines. The PGG company expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased and declared support for the survivors.
