The governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo), pre-candidate for the Presidency, ruled out this Wednesday, 25th, the possibility of being vice-president on any ticket in this year’s elections. The Minas Gerais native also reinforced that, if he doesn’t go to the second round, he will support any right-wing candidate and that he intends to run an active campaign against the PT.
“I’m going to take my pre-candidacy to the end. I’ve seen political leaders consider the issue of me allying with someone to be vice-president, I’m very honored to be remembered, but I have different proposals from the other candidates, I’m a different politician”, said Zema in an interview with G1 in Ribeirão Preto.
Behind the scenes, Zema was considered as vice-president in some right-wing candidacy, such as that of senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), but the Minas Gerais native denies the possibility. He also rules out running for the Senate. His interlocutors categorically state that Zema is a pre-candidate for president and that’s it.
“I want to actively participate in the first and second rounds”, says Zema. “We’ll see who will be in the second round, but whoever is against the PT, I will be giving my full support, as I did in 2022”.
The governor took the opportunity to criticize the party of current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT):
“I’m sure that Brazil’s handbrake, which doesn’t let Brazil move forward, develop economically and socially, is the PT, which has ideas that date back to the 60s or even the 50s. Unless we change this scenario here, Brazil won’t move forward.”

In the latest AtlasIntel survey released this Wednesday, 25th, Zema appeared as an insignificant name, scoring between 1.6% and 3.7% in all first round scenarios. However, the governor is confident that it can grow:
“In 2018, in March, when I started my pre-campaign for governor, I had 1% of voting intentions. I’m in a much better condition this year, I’m at 4%, 5%. As time progresses, as I travel around Brazil, we will certainly see a very significant change in this number”, says Zema.
Zema resigned from the government of Minas Gerais on Sunday, 22, to begin his pre-campaign for the Presidency of the Republic. He announced his intention to run for president in August last year.
