TSE approves federation between União Brasil and PP – 03/26/2026 – Politics

The (Superior Electoral Court) approved this Thursday (26) the registration of the federation, formed by União Brasil and the PP. Now, the two parties will function as a single party in this year’s elections, facilitating the election of deputies and adding to the electoral fund.

Rapporteur of the process at the TSE, minister Estela Aranha stated that the federation presented all the required documentation. The , but faced several state obstacles in defining who would lead the alliance in each state. Therefore, the registration request was only filed with the Electoral Court last December.

This is the fifth federation in force recognized by the TSE. In addition to the Progressive Union, there are the federations Brasil da Esperança (PT-PCdoB-PV), Renovação Solidária (PRD-Solidariedade), PSDB-Cidadania and PSol-Rede.

This alliance model replaced the old coalitions, when parties could form state unions to facilitate the election of deputies. Now, with the federation, the parties need to unite nationally and at state and municipal levels for a minimum period of four years.

If the alliance is broken before then, the law imposes sanctions on the parties. They would be prohibited from forming a new federation and forming coalitions for two elections and would not be able to use resources from the party fund until the end of the four-year period.

Together, the Union and PP currently have 101 deputies and twelve senators, but the number is expected to decrease by the end of the party window, on April 3, precisely because of those unresolved by the alliance in the states. It is expected, however, that access to a good portion of the party fund will enable the parties to be able to elect one of the largest parties in Congress.

According to a forecast from the 1º de Maio Foundation, linked to the Solidariedade party, the federation should concentrate R$ 953.6 million in party funds, which represents 19.2% of the funds available for all acronyms.

“This federation was born after a long period of conversations and discussions guided by the usual spirit, which is to offer Brazilians the best projects and the most qualified staff. Now, formally authorized by the Superior Electoral Court, it is time for us to start implementing everything we planned: making Brazil develop and generating dignity for Brazilians”, stated the president of União Brasil, Antônio Rueda.

The president of the PP, senator Ciro Nogueira (PI), added: “We are very proud of what we have built so far. This federation is the result of a lot of dialogue, partnership and trust. President Rueda and I will move forward, always putting Brazil first.”

União and PP are part of the so-called “centrão”, a group of parties that tends to ally with the current government. Both acronyms have a position more in line with the opposition to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), but they have nominees on the Esplanada. Wings of these parties, mainly based in the Northeast, must support the PT member.

Despite this, União and PP are the parties in the center with the best chance of formally joining Senator Flávio Bolsonaro’s (PL-RJ) ticket, who will run for President of the Republic. It is expected that the discussion of an alliance with the opposition pre-candidate will be resumed after the party window.
