Encouraged by the president (PT), the government wing of the PT reinforced the invitation to join the former president of (-MG) with an eye on a national alliance with the PT.
On Tuesday (24), after a conversation with Lula, MDB leaders called Pacheco and asked for a position by the end of the week, reaffirming their desire for him to join the party and move to Palácio Tiradentes. In favor of the acronym, they claim to offer a better structure for the dispute with the Government of Minas.
Pacheco still does not rule out joining the , although Lula himself has previously said that he sees the MDB as the best political option for him.
Since announcing his departure from the PSD last year, Pacheco has been courted by the MDB, the PSB and União Brasil. In recent days, conversations have narrowed between the first two.
With just over a week to go before the deadline for changing parties, however, the senator has repeated that his decision has not yet been made. Pacheco joined Minas Gerais’ allies to the PSB and told people close to him that he sees the party as a good political path.
This Wednesday (25), the senator participated in a dinner with members of the PSB — a meeting that was seen by the group as the sealing of an agreement. The national president, João Campos (PE), the president of Minas Gerais, Otacílio Costa, and the vice-president of the Republic, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), reinforced the invitation.
At MDB, Pacheco still faces reservations from the leadership, currently inclined to free the states to support Lula or Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), pre-candidate for president. Despite this, the Senate’s emedebista bench says it will not give up on its colleague.
“We cannot ignore what Pacheco’s return to the MDB will mean for the party,” said senator Veneziano Vital do Rêgo (MDB-PB) to the report this Wednesday, adding that Pacheco is one of the main figures in politics.
According to Lula’s allies, Pacheco’s entry into the MDB could increase the possibility of a formal alliance with the party in the presidential contest. The president, according to these reports, did not give up counting on the MDB in his search for re-election.
On Tuesday night, meeting at Palácio do Planalto, Lula and emedebistas reviewed the party’s alliances in the states, taking into account how their state directorates would position themselves in the face of a proposal to join forces with the PT in the presidential race.
MDB leaders pointed out federation units where direct intervention by Lula would be necessary to reach agreements. Bahia and Maranhão were cited as places where action from the president is required. In Bahia, the relationship between the two parties was described as autophagic.
Pacheco states that his decision on the candidacy for the Government of Minas Gerais also depends on the alignment of Lula’s political field in the state — which includes names such as the former mayor of Alexandre Kalil (PDT), the former mayor of Contagem Marília Campos (PT), pre-candidate for the Senate, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silva (PSD), and the former president of the Chamber of Belo Horizonte Gabriel Azevedo (MDB), who made his name available to the MDB for candidacy for the Minas Gerais government.
In search of a robust platform in Minas, Lula is one of the main enthusiasts of Pacheco’s candidacy. At the president’s request, PT members suspended conversations in which they looked for a plan B in the state. Lula also appealed to the president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP), to convince the senator to run.
The second largest electoral college in the country, Minas is considered essential for the president’s re-election.
