Incident occurred in the city of Derby and left 7 people seriously injured; 36-year-old suspect was arrested for attempted murder
A 36-year-old man was arrested on Saturday night (28 March 2026) after running over a group of pedestrians in the center of Derby, in the United Kingdom. The incident left 7 seriously injured, although authorities have confirmed that there is no risk of death.
The driver, identified as being of Indian nationality and resident of the United Kingdom, remains in custody and will face charges of attempted murder, dangerous driving and grievous bodily harm.
The vehicle, a black Suzuki Swift, was intercepted shortly after the incident in Friar Gate, a busy area of the city. The victims’ personal belongings were scattered across the road, which was isolated for technical examination.
ONGOING INVESTIGATION
Derbyshire Police confirmed that local detectives are leading the investigation with support from Counter Terrorism Police officers. The authorities emphasized, however, that the collaboration of the specialized unit is a standard protocol for this type of occurrence and that the incident “is not being treated as terrorism” not moment.
“We keep an open mind about what motivated the crime“, declared the corporation. New information should be released by the British authorities this Sunday afternoon (29 March).
EMERGENCY RESPONSE
The East Midlands Ambulance Service sent a task force made up of 7 ambulances and a Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) to the scene. The 7 injured were taken to Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Medical Center.
The Derby South MP, , thanked the emergency services for their response and asked people to avoid the Friar Gate area, which remains cordoned off for evidence collection.
