The president of the , (Republican Party), stated on Sunday (29 March 2026) that the country’s Armed Forces are building an underground military complex under a new ballroom under construction at the White House, in Washington, DC, according to the AFP agency. According to him, the hall will function as a cover for the structure installed underground.
Trump told reporters during a flight on Air Force One that work is ahead of schedule. “The military is building a huge complex under the ballroom, and we’re doing great“, he stated. The president also said that the hall will serve as an upper structure for what is being built below.
According to Trump, the existence of the project became public because of legal disputes related to the work. The president stated that the details have emerged “because of a stupid lawsuit”, without giving more information about the case.
Construction began after Trump ordered, in October 2025, the demolition of a wing of the building to make way for the new ballroom. The project budget increased from around US$200 million to US$400 million, with financing coming from private resources.
Trump did not reveal the purpose of the underground complex or the dimensions of the military structure. The president also said that he intends to carry out other urban interventions in the capital, including an arch inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
