André Ventura asks Luís Montenegro questions
“The Government and the PSD, as always, try to stay in the good graces of the Socialist Party. In life it is not possible to want to please everyone.”
When he revealed that he reached an agreement with the PSD on elections for external bodies and announced that the two parties will present a joint list of candidates for the State Council, André Ventura also spoke about the Nationality Law.
The president of Chega said that his party and PSD are “very close” to an understanding on the Nationality Lawand thus overcome the veto of the President of the Republic in the wake of the Constitutional Court’s lead.
This was on Thursday. Four days later, Ventura revealed that it was not possible to reach an agreement about this law and will move forward with “its own and autonomous proposals”, accusing the PSD of not being able to “be less socialist than the socialists”.
“It has not been possible, as of now, to reach an agreement with other parties in parliament to have a complete, viable diploma capable of being approved”, announced André Ventura at a press conference in Lisbon, after the PSD and CDS-PP had submitted proposals for amendments to the decrees on the nationality law, which they hope to see approved “with as much consensus as possible”.
The president of Chega expressed “particular sadness” after the party became “fully involved in negotiations to ensure that it was possible to circumvent the veto”, and, “at the same time, as the result of the legislative elections determined”, that the country was “safer, with less immigration and above all with criteria of clear justice, that whoever commits crimes in Portugal, having obtained Portuguese nationality, loses that Portuguese nationality”.
“The Government and the PSD, as always, try to stay in the good graces of the Socialist Party and show the electorate who voted for Chega that they are doing something. In life It is not possible to want to please everyone and it is not possible to want to carry out reforms and at the same time please those who have fought against these reforms all their lives”, he condemned.
According to the president of Chega, within the negotiation deadline, “the Government has not managed to be less socialist than the socialists” and therefore “there is no agreement”.
Asked about the fact that António Rodrigues, from the PSD, stated that the text of the PSD and CDS-PP already incorporate contributions from the three parties with which they met, the PS, Chega and IL, Ventura replied: “and false”.
“It is not true that there was any incorporation. Chega will have its own and autonomous proposals, as the Government knows, as it was in negotiations with us for hours and weeks on this subject. Therefore, it knows well that we will have our autonomous proposals and in its own diploma”, he said.
This statement by Ventura was about an hour after the PSD and CDS-PP had submitted proposals for amendments to the decrees on the nationality law, with deputy António Rodrigues considering that they overcome the unconstitutionalities that motivated the lead.
“There is no privilege here in relation to any party in particular (…) we integrated the contributions they wanted to make and sought, on the basis, to create as much consensus as possible under the nationality law”, he assured.
