US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Washington should “re-examine” its relationship with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) after the end of the current conflict in the Middle East, citing frustrations with European allies. In an interview with Fox Newshe suggested that the alliance may have become a “one-way street.”
Rubio said that if the US cannot use military bases on European territory at critical moments, NATO’s strategic value will be called into question. “If we cannot use these bases to defend US interests, then NATO is a one-way street,” he declared. “Why are we in NATO?” he asked, mentioning high costs borne by Washington in the military alliance.
According to him, the review will be inevitable after the conflict. “There is no doubt that, unfortunately, we will have to re-examine this relationship,” he said, adding that it will be necessary to assess whether the alliance “still serves American interests.”

Rubio also commented on the situation in Cuba, describing the scenario as “tragic” and stating that the country “literally has no economy”. For the secretary, the island faces deep structural problems and needs simultaneous changes. “Cuba needs two things: economic reforms and political reforms,” he said.
The secretary also assessed that Cuba’s current government system prevents any sustainable recovery. “You can’t fix the economy without changing the political system,” he said, indicating that new measures on the country could be announced soon.
US President Donald Trump has repeated that Cuba would be the “next” focus of an American attack. “I sincerely believe that I will have the honor of taking control of Cuba,” he told reporters at the White House in March.
