The United States Supreme Court has, for now, prevented the president from (Republican Party) fires member of the FED (Federal Reserve) Board of Governors . This Monday’s decision (June 29, 2026) comes on the same day that the Court allowed Trump to fire Democrat Rebecca Slaughter from the FTC (Federal Trade Commission, in Portuguese).
By 5 votes to 4, the Court found that Trump “failed to grant Cook the procedural protections to which she was entitled by law. Without those protections, she could not adequately challenge the allegations made by the president”.
Since the FED’s founding in 1913, no other president had attempted to remove a governor from the Board.
Conservative Justice John Roberts highlighted the importance of the FED’s independence in his decision. “We see no reason to leave the public in suspense or to sow doubts regarding the situation of one of the most important financial institutions in our country”he added.
Cook thanked the Supreme Court’s decision and stated that the process was an attempt to interfere in decisions at the FED. “These were never mortgage documents signed years before I became governor of the Federal Reserve. It was an attempt to remove me under a fabricated pretext because I refused to bow to political pressure and continued to set interest rates based solely on what best served the American people.”.
Trump, in turn, said the decision was made due to issues “strictly procedural”.
“Cook’s suit regarding his suitability for a seat on the Federal Reserve Board has been remanded by the Supreme Court on strictly procedural grounds. We will take appropriate action immediately to ensure that someone who has committed wrongdoing is not made vital decisions about the well-being of the United States of America!”Trump posted on his TruthSocial.
