Monday (29) was not just a day for Brazilian fans to celebrate the Brazilian team’s hard-earned qualification to the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. In the evening, there was a celebration for the elimination of Germany, defeated on penalties by Paraguay in the 32nd round.
As soon as Canale hit and converted the last kick, residents of places like Copacabana, a neighborhood in the south of Rio, went to celebrate in the windows of buildings.
Shouts and the sound of horns filled the room. Germany were Brazil’s tormentors in the 2014 World Cup, when they defeated the team led by Felipão 7-1. In this 2026 World Cup, they made noise in the first phase by repeating the score and making it 7-1 in Curaçao.
A similar party was seen in São Paulo. In the Pinheiros region, residents went to their windows with vuvuzelas to celebrate the fall of the four-time world champion.
In a bar in Barra Funda, fans still dressed in Brazil shirts followed Paraguay’s match on big screens. In the end, a new party was formed.
The game
The match, which ended 1-1, was played on Monday night in Boston, in the round of 32 of the World Cup.
Now, the South American team awaits the winner of the match between France and Sweden, which will be this Tuesday (30), at 6 pm (Brasília time). The round of 16 game is scheduled for Saturday (4), at 6pm.
The penalties ended with the score 4-3 for Paraguay. Canale scored the qualifying penalty.
