China confirms 219 cases of foot-and-mouth disease in livestock

China has confirmed cases of foot-and-mouth disease in cattle herds in the cities of Gansu and Xinjiang. The cases involved more than 6 thousand animals, of which 219 showed symptoms of the disease.

Examinations by the Chinese Center for Animal Disease Prevention and Control carried out at the Reference Laboratory confirmed the outbreaks on March 28. The cases occurred in Yining County, Ili Prefecture, Xinjiang Province, and Gulang County, Wuwei City, Gansu Province.

According to Reuters, the outbreak in Xinjiang involved a market with a total of 142, of which 142 showed symptoms, the Chinese ministry said. The focus in Gansu involved a cattle farm with a total of 5,716 animals, 77 of which showed symptoms.

“Following the outbreaks, local authorities immediately implemented emergency response plans, including culling, disinfection, safe disposal, monitoring and screening, and epidemiological investigations,” China reported.
