Copacabana Palace Theater named after Fernanda Montenegro

The iconic theater of Copacabana Palacein Rio de Janeiro, considered one of the most prestigious stages in the country, gained a new name last Wednesday night (1st). Now, the room that has already hosted several powers of national dramaturgy, is called Fernando Montenegro Theater.

The change is a living tribute to “Great Lady” of Brazilian theater, with a trajectory that blends with the hotel’s own history, honoring the past while inspiring the future.

At 96 years old, he holds the title of having occupied the C stage the most times, totaling the largest number of seasons in the venue’s history. His relationship with the house dates back to the beginning of his career, when in 1950 he debuted in the play “As joyful songs on the mountain”, directed by Ester Leão.

Over the following decades, Fernanda also starred in memorable hits such as “Jezebel” (1952), “Mary Mary” (1963), “Any Wednesday” (1964) e “Plaza suite” (1970).

“For Copacabana Palace, it is an immeasurable honor that our theater bears Fernanda’s name. She helped build it as an icon of Brazilian culture. Renaming it is celebrating the past, present and future of our art”, he states Ulisses MarreirosDirector of Belmond in Brazil.

Continuing the celebrations, between the 3rd and 5th of April and the 17th to the 19th, Fernanda will return to occupy the theater stages with a series of dramatized readings of works by Nelson Rodrigues and Simone de Beauvouir.
