The US announced that a high-level meeting on Iran would be held in Doha this Tuesday (30), with the presence of President Donald Trump’s top envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, while technical negotiations would also continue in parallel.
In a post on social media this Monday (29), Trump stated that Iran had requested a meeting and that it would take place in the capital of Qatar, without providing additional details.
Shortly afterwards, Trump’s press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, said in an interview with Fox News that Witkoff and Kushner would participate in the talks.
“Special Envoy Witkoff and Jared Kushner will travel to Doha this week as we continue to discuss the . In parallel with these high-level talks, technical negotiations will take place,” she said.
“For our part, we are fulfilling our obligation to the ceasefire. Violence will be met with violence,” Leavitt added.
The US and Iran on June 17 signed a 14-point memorandum of understanding aimed at ending four months of conflict; under the deal, both sides agreed to cease hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas normally transits.
However, tit-for-tat retaliatory attacks over the weekend threatened to derail the fragile agreement.
The return to negotiations comes after several days of attacks and counterattacks that began when an Iranian projectile hit a cargo ship in the strait on Thursday, with the US and Iran accusing each other of violating the interim ceasefire.
“There have been attacks on commercial ships that the United States of America, at the direction of the president, has responded to — and that will continue to happen, although we hope not to see such episodes. The president obviously wants to see the peace process move forward,” Leavitt said.
