The arrival of the first North American MQ-9 Reaper drone at Lajes Base, in the Azores, is generating a strong impact and debate.
Known as a “killer drone”, this device impresses with its dimensions and operational capacity. About 11 meters long and with a wingspan of 20 meters, it can carry up to eight precision missiles. Furthermore, it is operated remotely and has an autonomy of up to 27 hours of flight, with an estimated cost of around 48 million euros per unit.
The Lajes Base now assumes a strategic role as a point of logistical support, maintenance and refueling of this military equipment, this being the first time that this type of drone has landed in Portuguese territory. Three to four devices are expected to arrive on Terceira Island.
According to known information, these drones could be used in United States operations in the Middle East, particularly in connection with the North American base in Amman, Jordan.
The situation has already prompted political reactions in Portugal, with parties asking the Government for clarification. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, guaranteed, however, that the use of the base by the United States respects international law, highlighting that Portugal is not involved in any conflict with Iran.
