Emmanuel Macron claims that Donald Trump is undermining trust in NATO with his daily statements. He warns that the uncertainty surrounding US commitments weakens the security of allies.
French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday that US President Donald Trump is weakening NATO as he “raises doubts every day about the commitment” to the alliance. TASR informs about it based on the AFP report.
“If you create doubts every day about your commitment, you weaken it,” Macron said during a visit to South Korea. In his words, “there’s too much talk… and on all sides.”
He does not consider the solution to be realistic
In addition, the French leader declared that he does not consider it a “realistic” solution to undertake a military operation to liberate the Strait of Hormuz. “There are people advocating the liberation of the Strait of Hormuz through force and military operations, a position the United States has repeatedly taken … but it is not feasible. It would take an inordinate amount of time and expose anyone who sails through the Strait to coastal threats from the (Iranian) Revolutionary Guards, which have significant resources, ballistic missiles, and other potential risks,” he explained.
According to Macron, the US and Israeli attacks do not solve the issue of Tehran’s nuclear program. “A targeted military operation, even if it lasts only a few weeks, will not allow us to solve the nuclear issue in the long term,” he said. “If there is no framework for diplomatic and technical negotiations, the situation may deteriorate again in a few months or years,” he added, stressing the need to conclude a ceasefire and resume negotiations.
