Lula government formalizes Alckmin’s departure from MDIC

The measure comes after Lula confirmed that Alckmin will again be a candidate for vice president on the PT ticket in this year’s elections

Lula confirmed that Alckmin will be a candidate for vice president of the Republic again.

The president’s government Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) officially left the vice-president Geraldo Alckmin of the command Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC). The dismissal was published in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU) this Friday (3).

The measure takes place after Lula confirms that Alckmin will again be a candidate for vice president on the PT ticket in this year’s elections. The announcement was made during the first ministerial meeting of 2026, held last Tuesday (31), at Palácio do Planalto.

On that occasion, the president said goodbye toand stated that Alckmin would need to leave the ministry to run. “Comrade Alckmin will have to leave the MDIC because he will be a candidate for vice-president of the Republic again”, he declared.

The departure occurs within the electoral disqualification period, which requires ministers, governors and mayors to leave their positions by April 4th to be able to compete for other positions in the elections, as per rules of Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
