New affiliations threaten to widen division on the right in MG – 04/03/2026 – Politics

Six months before the election, the dispute for the Government of Brazil has a fragmented right, with at least three possible candidates for Palácio Tiradentes.

The chance of unification of this group, which was already considered small, decreased even further with the formal affiliations this week. The electoral legislation window for changing parties ends this Friday (3).

(), which took over state management with (Novo), is today the most consolidated name to be on the ballot on October 4th.

Senator Cleitinho Azevedo (), who leads polls of voting intentions, states that he has until the beginning of August — the deadline for party conventions — to decide whether he will be a candidate.

A third name gained strength this week: (Federation of Industries of the State of Minas Gerais), made the right trip to .

The businessman’s eventual candidacy is seen internally as a way of guaranteeing a platform for Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) in Minas if the party does not form alliances with other candidates. Like , Roscoe’s name appeared in a note made by the presidential candidate during a meeting in February.

The PL movement occurs amid Cleitinho’s uncertainty and Simões’ commitment to support Zema, his ally, in the presidential race.

Roscoe announced on Wednesday (1st) his resignation as president of Fiemg, one day after joining the PL, but avoided confirming that he will run and with the party so that his pre-candidacy can take off.

“That wasn’t the dialogue. I joined and made my name available. They understand that I would be a great name to lead the government ticket or make a composition”, he stated.

The PL’s movement was interpreted by Simões as resistance to an alliance. In response, the vice-governor articulated Senator Carlos Viana’s affiliation with the PSD.

President of the INSS CPI, Viana left Podemos and must run for re-election to the Senate on Simões’ ticket, occupying a vacancy that had been negotiated with the PL.

The president of the PSD, , also sought to remove Simões’ candidacy from the PL, despite the signals that were being sent by the governor to the party.

“Our path is to elect Mateus Simões. It is neither with Bolsonarism nor with PTism. We want an alternative for Minas and for Brazil”, he said.

Viana’s entry, however, generated discomfort among organizers of Simões’ candidacy. Marcelo Aro (PP), who was secretary of the Zema and Simões governments and is also a pre-candidate for the Senate on the ticket, criticized the alliance.

Aro wants to go to the contest in October accompanied by federal deputy Domingos Sávio, the main name of the Minas Gerais PL to run for the Senate.

Viana, in turn, minimized the impasse and reaffirmed his intention to run for re-election. “We are not at a time to look for divisions within a group that will win this election,” he said.

While the right increases its uncertainties, the left sees the possibility of senator Rodrigo Pacheco’s candidacy for the Government of Minas growing. , but avoided confirming that he will be in contention.

According to allies, Pacheco is in no hurry and intends to first map political support from other parties in Minas. Today, the PSB is not considered among the parties with the greatest presence in the state, having 22 mayors, two state deputies and no federal deputies.
