US President Donald Trump fired Attorney General Pam Boddy on Thursday. According to a White House official, the US president took this action because of growing dissatisfaction with her performance.
Among other things, she is accused of mishandling the cases involving Jeffrey Epstein. According to Reuters, Trump also expressed frustration that Bondi was not moving quickly enough to prosecute critics and opponents he wanted to face criminal charges.
During her tenure as America’s law enforcement chief, Bondi has been a staunch supporter of Trump’s agenda and overturned the Justice Department’s longstanding tradition of conducting its investigations independently of the White House.
But it was repeated criticism of the Epstein cases, including from Trump allies and some Republican lawmakers, that ended up dominating her tenure.
Bodi was accused of covering up or mismanaging the release of records related to the Justice Department’s sex-trafficking investigations involving Epstein, a financier who had cultivated relationships with a string of rich and powerful figures.
Her removal could lead to a restructuring of the Justice Department’s strategy and, potentially, a renewed effort to use the US legal system against Trump’s goals.
Bondi is the second high-ranking Trump official to depart recently. Trump fired Homeland Security Secretary Kristy Noem on March 5, following criticism of her handling of the agency and Trump’s immigration policy.
