Slovak cyclist Peter Sagan he was last at the start as an active rider in June 2024, when he completed the Around Slovakia race. In an interview with the Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad looked back on his career and also explained what he is currently doing.
Sagan has not completely disappeared from the eyes of the sports public, he usually acts as an ambassador at various events. “I have to organize everything myself, but I’m not complaining, it’s less stressful than in the past,” said the former representative of Slovakia. He is engaged in cycling only on a recreational level. When asked how long he would last with his younger self, he replied that maybe the first 30 kilometers.
The three-time world champion (2015 – 2017) and seven-time winner of the green jersey for the best sprinter at the Tour de France (2012 – 2016, 2018 – 2019) also evaluated the current events in cycling. “Now Pogačar will attack 120 kilometers before the finish line. Times have changed. I was smarter, I liked victories, but I didn’t want to suffer. When I could wait, I waited. It was easier and less painful.” Sagan thought.
The “Covid” years brought a turning point in his performance: “The last three years have been a nightmare. I’ve been asking myself more and more what I’m doing here. I should have been at home with my son.” Just as Sagan was a phenomenon, now the Slovenian Tadej Pogačar is dictating the events in the peloton.
“From a sporting point of view, Pogačar is amazing. He should race in a separate category. They say that cycling is not like PlayStation. With him, it is, even easier than playing on PlayStation. I always wave to him from afar, I can only keep up with him when he has rest days,” added Sagan in conclusion.
