Iran executed two men for alleged ties to Israel and the US during the protests

Iran executed two men on Sunday who were convicted of collaborating with Israel and the United States during the anti-government protests that swept the country earlier this year. The news portal Mizan reported that the executed men, Mohamad-Amin Biglari and Shahin Vahedparast, were hanged after Iran’s Supreme Court upheld their sentences.

  • On Sunday, Iran executed two men by hanging for alleged espionage activities.
  • Mohamad-Amín Biglárí and Šáhín Váhedparast were convicted for collaborating with the United States.
  • Protests broke out due to the worsening economic situation and grew into resistance to the regime.
  • Iran reports more than three thousand victims of the riots, activists report more than seven thousand dead.
  • The regime has stepped up executions of opponents, while international organizations are calling for their immediate halt.

According to Iranian authorities, both men were actively involved in the protests, which initially began as a reaction to the deteriorating economic situation in the country. However, the demonstrations that broke out in late December quickly spread and grew into a broader resistance to the authoritarian regime.

Protests and violence

The riots escalated especially during the nights of January 8 and 9, when the security forces cracked down hard on the demonstrators. Iranian authorities say the protests, which were initially peaceful, later turned into violent riots fueled by foreign forces. According to them, these riots were accompanied by vandalism and attacks that claimed lives.

Official figures from Tehran speak of more than 3,000 victims, among whom are not only demonstrators, but also members of the security forces and civilians. On the other hand, the American Human Rights Activists Reporting Agency (HRANA) reports that the death toll exceeds 7,000, with the majority of victims being protesters. At the same time, the organization warns that the actual number of victims may be even higher.

Executions and repression

In recent days, Iran has stepped up executions of people associated with protests or opposition groups. Among them are members of the People’s Mujahideen of Iran (MEK), which the regime considers a terrorist group. These actions have drawn sharp criticism from the international community and human rights organizations, which point to a lack of a fair trial and harsh repression of the opposition.

However, Iranian authorities continue to defend their actions by claiming that these are necessary measures to protect the country’s national security and stability. However, international organizations and activists are calling for an immediate halt to the executions and for an independent investigation into the violence during the protests.
