Priest sparks controversy by saying church is no place for animals

Padre gera polêmica ao afirmar que igreja não é lugar para animais

A statement made during a celebration in , became the center of an intense debate this weekend. During the homily, the priest responsible for the celebration devoted part of his speech to categorically stating that “the church is not a place for animals”.

The priest’s positioning occurred after the record of a dog circulating near the temple. According to the religious man’s report to the faithful, the animal had tried to bite a child, which led to the alert. During the preaching, the priest highlighted that his institutional and spiritual mission is primarily focused on caring for people.

On the other hand, many parishioners and residents came to the priest’s defense. This group claims that the priority must be the safety of the faithful, especially children and the elderly, and that the religious environment requires silence and organization that can be compromised by the presence of stray animals.

No Official Manifestation

Until the closing of this article, the Parish of São Raimundo Nonato had not issued an official note about the episode or about possible new guidelines for access to the temple.

The case rekindles an old discussion about the coexistence between animals and public or religious spaces, putting on the agenda the balance between Christian charity towards animals and the maintenance of safety and liturgical protocol within churches.
