A Russia and China used their veto rights in the UN Security Council and took down, this Tuesday (7), a resolution that demanded the unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz and promoted the escort of ships.

The draft resolution, drafted by Bahrain and supported by the Gulf countries and the United States,b had 11 votes in favortwo against and two abstentions.

Voting took place hours before the expiration of the completed by American president, Donald Trumpwho threatened to destroy Iran “completely” on Tuesday night if Tehran did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz, vital for global oil supplies.

Bahrain, a non-permanent member of the Council, presented a text proposal two weeks ago that would have granted a clear UN mandate to any state or coalition of states that wanted to use force to free this sea route.

But, in the face of objections from several permanent members, the text was gradually modified and the vote, initially scheduled for last Friday, was postponed several times due to the risk of Russian and Chinese vetoes, which actually took place this Tuesday.
