An architect based in London created the . It is an application that uses shadow simulations based on public data on the height and structure of buildings.
The tool was born from a daily need: find a place to have an iced coffee in the sun on a spring day, without having to blindly navigate the city.
The portal reports that the idea came up in April last year, when Mo Dawod, a 34-year-old Egyptian architect, realized that there was no simple way to identify the establishments with the best sun exposure in London.
The day he thought about it, that same night, he developed a first digital map that cross-referenced public information about buildings to calculate shadow zones in outdoor leisure spaces.
The project, initially thought of as a personal solution, quickly became popular in the online world (it became viral no Reddit).
It was so successful that Dawod turned the prototype into a commercial application and ended up leaving the architectural profession – to dedicate himself to the project full time.
Just days after the formal launch, Sunseekr arrived on first place of downloads in the “lifestyle” category in the United Kingdom.
The application uses sun and moon icons to indicate whether a location is exposed to sunlight at that time.
Features available: alerts to let you know when a favorite space is in the sun, opening and closing times, user comments and greater promotional emphasis for participating establishments (these require an annual payment).
And the platform already has more than 250 thousand users.
Sunseekr has also been launched in other countries, such as Germany e Spain, and is now asking the community for help to map more spaces – due to a lack of capacity to cover all the locations manually.
