Iran accepts ceasefire proposal with US and indicates reopening of Hormuz

Iran accepted Pakistan’s ceasefire proposal and indicated that the Strait of Hormuz will be reopened for two weeks. Iran’s response comes shortly after US President Donald Trump announced that he agreed to suspend the attack and bombing of Iran for two weeks.

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, communicated the decision through a statement published on X. According to him, safe passage through Hormuz will be possible through coordination with the Iranian Armed Forces and considering technical limitations.

“If attacks against Iran are stopped, our powerful Armed Forces will cease their defense operations,” says Araghchi’s statement.

The Iranian foreign minister praised Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s mediation efforts to end the war in the Middle East and the US government’s willingness to negotiate on Iran’s 10-point proposal.

The proposal presented by Pakistan would have had Chinese intervention to be accepted by the new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, as three Iranian officials told the American newspaper The New York Times.

The ceasefire was also confirmed by Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, who announced that this agreement was accepted by Iran, the United States and their allies. He also said that the immediate ceasefire is valid everywhere, including Lebanon, which has been the target of Israeli attacks.

Conversations will take place on Friday

Iranian state media reported that talks between the two countries will take place on Friday (10) and could be extended. They will take place in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan and were also confirmed by the Pakistani prime minister.

“Both sides have demonstrated remarkable wisdom and understanding, remaining constructively committed to promoting peace and stability. We sincerely hope that the talks in Islamabad will achieve lasting peace and look forward to sharing more good news in the coming days!” Sharif wrote on X.

According to state TV, Iran’s Supreme Security Council presented a 10-point proposal to the United States through Pakistan, which will be debated on Friday. It includes controlled transit through the Strait of Hormuz, coordinated with the Iranian Armed Forces, the end of the war against Iran and allied groups, and the combat withdrawal of US forces from all bases in the region.

Furthermore, Iran reported that the proposal also covers the suspension of all primary and secondary sanctions, the payment of full compensation to Iran and the release of all frozen Iranian assets.

Iranian media also highlight that the official opening of negotiations does not necessarily mean the end of the war, because Iran will only agree to end the conflict when the details are finalized in accordance with the ten-point peace plan.

The Iranian document, however, includes conditions that the US has rejected in the past, such as continued uranium enrichment.
