Senator Weverton Rocha (PDT-MA) was made official, this Thursday (9), as rapporteur for the appointment of the Union’s attorney general, Jorge Messias, to the Federal Supreme Court (STF).
The choice had already been signaled at the beginning of the week by the president of the Senate’s Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ), Otto Alencar (PSD-BA).
Rocha is expected to read his report on the nomination next Wednesday (15).
The senator had previously indicated that he will present a favorable opinion to Messias, as he considers that the Union’s attorney general “fulfills all the necessary requirements to occupy the vacancy”.
The expectation is that the Commission will hold the Messias hearing on the 29th. If approved, the name nominated by President Lula to fill the vacancy left by Minister Luís Roberto Barroso will go to vote in the CCJ plenary.
The hearing will be the central stage for Messiah to take office. In it, Lula’s nominee must answer questions about past decisions, his performance at the Federal Attorney General’s Office and his understanding of sensitive topics judged by the STF.

With the nomination approved by the CCJ, the senators will hold a new secret vote in the plenary, which will require an absolute majority of the House — the equivalent of at least 41 votes in favor.
If approved, the result will be communicated to Lula, who must formalize the appointment by decree.
