UGT meeting
Even the Government’s new proposal “does not yet allow us to reach consensus” – but the negotiations will not end.
“We have reached a level of construction of the proposal that is on the table among everyone that now requires each structure to consult its bodies and associates. We will calmly wait for this consultation to be carried out. This consultation will naturally be definitive.”
After the (53rd) meeting around the new labor law, the Minister of Labor seemed confident. Maria do Rosário Palma Ramalho that the agreement would be close, but such a “definitive” consultation was necessary in each structure.
The first outcome of this consultation was not what the minister wanted: the General Union of Workers (UGT) rejected the Government’s new proposal.
“The national secretariat of the UGT, meeting on April 9th, still finds insufficient negotiating approaches and states that the proposal does not allow reaching consensus” – reads the document that was approved by unanimity, this Thursday.
Even so, despite still not being convinced, the union organization announced that negotiations will continue.
All for “fairer, more inclusive labor legislation, which responds to the challenges of the present and future of work, with collective bargaining and stronger and more dynamic unions”.
After the “resounding no” in a first reaction, still in July 2025, the UGT has already achieved small victories on the issues of dismissals and outsourcing – but even so, the Government’s proposal remains unapproved.
