A great loss for Slovak culture: a singer whose penetrating voice was heard around the world has died!

The city of Ružomberok expressed regret over the death of Slovak folklorist and honorary citizen of the city Anna Hulejová. The singer of folk songs was also a recipient of Pribin’s Cross II. class, which was awarded to her for her extraordinary contribution to Slovak culture in the field of folk art. As the municipality stated on the social network, she was buried on Thursday (April 9) at the Rožomberok cemetery.

“For years, her piercing voice brought the beauty of our folk traditions to life, bringing joy, pride and emotion to generations of listeners. But even more than her artistic talent, we will remember her humanity – humility, kindness and willingness to listen to everyone who turned to her. She was a woman with a big heart, who spread goodness, peace and respect for our roots with her singing and life.” pointed out from the town hall.

Mayor Ľubomír Kubáň added that Anna Hulejová will forever remain part of the cultural heritage of the city of Ružomberok and in the memories of all who had the honor of knowing her.

A native of the village of Liptovské Sliače, she was born in 1939 and was inclined to folk songs from an early age. She started in the folklore ensembles Sliačanka, Liptov and Partizán. Later she performed with the folklore ensemble Radosť spod Salatín from Ružomberok. She also acted in films and collaborated with Slovak Radio. Anna Hulejová’s singing was heard at folklore festivals all over Europe, in the USA, Latin America, Mexico and Africa.
