Tough week for Sam Altman. A 20-year-old man was arrested this Friday for allegedly throwing a molotov cocktail against the CEO’s mansion OpenAIthe influential company artificial intelligence responsible for ChatGPTin San Francisco.
The attack, in which no one was injured, occurred four days after the magazine The New Yorker published an investigation that delves into the accusations that the young technology mogul habitually lies to get what he wants, an attitude that generates distrust in Silicon Valley and within the company he co-founded, from which he was briefly expelled in 2023.
The incident against his home occurred at dawn, when the “incendiary device” hit an exterior door of the property without causing major damage, the police reported in a message published on the social network X.
“At approximately 3:45 in the morning, an unidentified individual approached Sam’s residence and threw an incendiary device towards the property. The device fell nearby and went out. There were no injuries and only minimal damage was reported,” reads the internal message that OpenAI’s corporate security team sent to the company’s staff.
Threat to OpenAI headquarters
Less than an hour later, police officers police of San Francisco responded to a call in the Mission Bay neighborhood, where OpenAI’s headquarters is located, by an individual who was allegedly threatening to burn down the building. The police identified the suspect as the same one involved in the previous attack and proceeded to arrest him.
The alleged perpetrator of the events, against whom charges have not yet been filed, “made threats” in front of the offices of the famous start-upalso co-founded by Elon Muskamong others. Authorities have not revealed the identity of the attacker or given more details about the investigation.
Last November, OpenAI was already forced to close its office after an alleged threat from an activist, according to the technology magazine Wiredthe first media outlet to report the incident.
