The 10th democratic parliamentary elections in Hungary went well, with a record turnout, President Tamás Sulyok announced on Sunday after the official closing of polling stations. TASR informs about this according to the report of the portal 24.hu.

“I received information from the National Electoral Office (NVI) that the elections went well,” confirmed Sulyok.

The President announces the steps

“In accordance with the Basic Law and constitutional traditions, I will give the mandate to form the government,” said Sulyok, who indicated that he would hold consultations for this purpose after learning the election results.

Polling stations in Hungary closed at 7:00 p.m. Voter turnout was a record, reaching 77.8 percent half an hour before the end of the election. This is the highest voter turnout recorded in the country since the regime change in 1989.

The fight between Orbán and Magyar

The main fight in the elections was between the Fidesz-KDNP government bloc led by Prime Minister and Fidesz Chairman Viktor Orbán and the opposition Tisza party led by MEP Péter Magyar.

After handing over the ballot, Orbán declared that he would resign from the leadership of Fidesz only in the event of a crushing defeat in the elections. Péter Magyar called for a joint and peaceful regime change in the country, reminds 24.hu.
