Player is killed in attack on team bus in Ghana – 04/13/2026 – Sport

A 20-year-old Ghanaian football player, Dominic Frimpong, was killed during an attack by armed robbers on the bus in which he was traveling with his team, the GFA (Ghana Football Association) reported on Monday (13).

Ghana’s first division club Berekum Chelsea FC said in a statement that “masked men armed with pistols and assault rifles” shot at the team bus and forced players to take refuge in the bush.

The robbery, according to Ghanaian police, occurred at around 10:30 pm local time, on a road in the Ashanti region, in the west of the country.

Police said Frimpong suffered gunshot wounds and died in hospital while receiving treatment.

“Another victim, 52-year-old George Owusu Afriyie, was also assaulted and robbed of 4,500 GHS (about US$408),” police added in a statement.

The GFA called the incident “tragic” and lamented “a great loss for Berekum Chelsea, but also for Ghanaian football as a whole”.

“Dominic was a promising young player whose commitment and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league,” the statement added.

The 20-year-old striker joined Berekum Chelsea FC on loan from Aduana Stars FC at the start of the year.

He played 13 matches and scored two goals for the club, according to local press.
