Pope Leo XIV. landed in Algeria and stressed that he would remain a vocal critic of the war despite Trump’s attacks. He dedicates his African trip to peace and dialogue.
Pope Leo XIV. on Monday he arrived in Algeria, where he will start a ten-day visit to Africa. He told US President Donald Trump, who had previously criticized him, that he would continue to speak out against the war and that he was not afraid of his government. TASR informs about it according to the agencies AFP and Reuters.
The first pope from the United States spoke on board the plane about the criticism directed at him by Trump. In a post on the social network on Monday night, the latter reproached him for being too “liberal” and “not doing his job well”. This came after the top official of the Catholic Church called for peace in the Middle East on Saturday.
“I don’t want to get into a polemic with him,” said Leo XIV. for Reuters. “I do not think that the message of the Gospel should be abused as some people do. I will continue to speak out against war and try to promote peace, dialogue and multilateral relations between states in order to find just solutions to problems,” he said. According to him, too many people around the world are suffering and someone must stand up for them.
The Pope arrived in Algiers around 11:00 a.m. CET. It will be the first to honor the memory of the victims of the Algerian War of Independence from France (1954-1962). He also plans to meet with President Abdal Majid Tabbún and local political and spiritual representatives.
