Castro Marim formalized a twinning protocol with the towns of Alleins, in France, and Tejeda, in Spain, with the aim of developing joint cooperation projects and enhancing Mediterranean and European territories linked to almond cultivation.
The agreement aims to reinforce the almond tree and its fruits as a common identity element for the three territories, which share a tradition rooted in the cultivation of this species and associated festivities, promoting structured and long-term cooperation.
Festivities gain European projection
As part of this twinning, the official participation of the three municipalities in the respective festivals dedicated to the almond blossom was established, including the Almond Tree Festival in Flor do Algarve, in Alta Mora. These initiatives begin to be seen as a showcase of cultural and institutional projection on a European scale.
The three municipalities will develop joint initiatives in the areas of cultural, rural and natural tourism, including the creation of a European Almond Festival Route, aimed at positioning these territories on the map of European themed tourism.
Sustainability and innovation at the center of cooperation
The protocol also includes measures related to environmental challenges, with a commitment to stimulating research and development of almond varieties that are more resistant to drought, pests and diseases, as well as promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
At the same time, the development of new food products derived from almonds will be encouraged, combining tradition and innovation and reinforcing the competitiveness of small family productions.
The twinning also foresees the promotion of school exchanges and educational cooperation initiatives between the three municipalities, with the aim of involving younger generations in valuing this common heritage.
Applications for European funds in preparation
The municipalities are also committed to developing joint applications for European funding programs, and an application for the Creative Europe program is already being prepared, to be submitted in May.
It is also planned to create its own brand, visual identity and letter of commitment to integrate future initiatives of the European almond network, of which Castro Marim, Alleins and Tejeda are pioneers.
The twinning protocol was signed by the president of , Filomena Sintra, by the president of the Tejeda City Council, Francisco Juan Perera Hernández, and by the president of the Alleins City Council, Philippe Grange.
