In the autocrats’ playbook it is always one of the first steps: the independent judiciary is restricted, undermined and ultimately abolished. This not only affects public prosecutors and courts, but increasingly also the legal profession. There are plenty of current examples: The US government under President Donald Trump threatened several “unfriendly” law firms with the destruction of their economic existence. In Turkey, several lawyers recently received long prison sentences for representing Kurdish prisoners.
