The United States is preparing to send thousands more troops to the Middle East in an effort to pressure Iran into a deal to end the war. Citing American sources familiar with the matter, the Washington Post reported on this on Wednesday, writes TASR.
According to the report, approximately 6,000 troops aboard the aircraft carrier USS George HW Bush and several other military vessels could be moved to the region; 4,200 more troops could join them in the latter part of the month. It would coincide with the end of a two-week ceasefire on April 22, The Guardian reported.
The US Department of Defense is considering further strikes against Iran or ground operations on Iranian soil, sources told the Washington Post. According to them, the goal of such missions could be to take nuclear material out of the country, send marines to coastal areas to protect the Strait of Hormuz, or occupy the island of Khark, Iran’s main oil export terminal. The US has not publicly commented on the report.
