Foreigners discovered a coastal city in Portugal that the Portuguese 'ignore': in August you sleep for €90 and eat for €15

Setúbal is asserting itself as an alternative tourist destination in Portugal, combining more affordable prices with relevant natural and gastronomic heritage, at a time when foreign visitors’ interest in places outside the traditional circuits is growing. The proximity to Lisbon contrasts with the lower internal demand, creating a scenario in which the city begins to be discovered by those coming from outside, while many Portuguese continue to ignore the available supply.

According to the travel blog, Setúbal brings together three distinct natural elements within a short radius: the Sado Estuary, the Serra da Arrábida and an Atlantic front with beaches of high environmental quality. According to the same source, this combination allows for an unusual diversity of experiences, from nature trails to bathing areas with specific geological characteristics that influence the transparency of the water.

Conditioned beaches and controlled demand

The blog writes that the Arrábida Natural Park has access rules in the months of greatest demand, limiting the number of visitors during the summer as a form of environmental protection. Beaches, such as Galapinhos, Galapos or Portinho da Arrábida appear frequently in international classifications, and are also recommended outside of high season, when access is simpler.

On the other hand, fishing activity continues to mark the city’s identity, directly influencing local restaurants and the quality of available products. Cuttlefish is one of the examples most associated with the region, being prepared in different ways, from a fresh product that does not always reach the capital’s kitchens under the same conditions.

Local market and seasonality

The Livramento Market operates based on the direct sale of landed fish, with daily variation depending on the catch. The space, adds the blog Volto Já, continues to be frequented mainly by residents, reflecting a consumption logic based on seasonality and the real availability of the product.

The Sado Estuary is home to a resident population of bottlenose dolphins, and it is possible to observe these animals through organized outings. The region’s salt flats are also used for birdwatching activities, attracting specialized visitors looking for specific species.

Culture outside the big circuits

The newspaper writes that Setúbal maintains a cultural program associated with its size, including events such as the city’s International Film Festival. There are also spaces dedicated to contemporary art and museum structures that reflect different historical periods, without strong tourist pressure.

The same source mentions that accommodation and food costs remain below those charged in Lisbon. In August, a one-night stay for two people at the Ibis Hotel in Setúbal costs 89 euros, at any time of the month.

When it comes to restaurants, prices can vary depending on what you are looking for, but it is common to find meals for 15 euros. At the Tasca da Esquina restaurant, for example, you can eat fried cuttlefish, the city’s typical dish, for 14.50 euros. This price can always drop if you book your table through The Fork app.
