Almost seven years after the sentence that convicted nine leaders of the , the Supreme Court has authorized the Mossos d’Esquadra to destroy the material intervened during the independence referendum of October 1, 2017, which served as evidence in the investigation and in the trial that was held two years later. In a resolution to which EL PAÍS has had access, the court that tried the process gives green light to the Mossos to get rid of the ballot boxes, ballots and other objects and documents collected by the agents, but he urged them to keep one or two samples of each piece of evidence and send it to the Supreme Court headquarters for safekeeping.
The high court’s decision comes as a result of a letter sent to the Criminal Chamber by the General Police Directorate of the Generalitat, in which it asked the judges for permission to destroy the material intervened during the day of the referendum that gave rise to the judicial case that ended with sentences of ; the former president of the Parliament Carme Forcadell, five other members of the Government and THE leaders of the ANC and Òmnium. The opening of this case is also what resulted from Spain’s departure from the former president Carles Puigdemont, whom the Supreme Court maintains being prosecuted in absentia.
