Lula is received by Pedro Sánchez in an official ceremony in Spain

The president (PT) was received this Friday (April 17, 2026) by the head of the government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez (PSOE, left), in a ceremony at the Royal Palace of Pedralbes, in Barcelona. The meeting marked the opening of the 1st edition of the Spain-Brazil Summit.

After the playing of the national anthems, the 2 leaders greeted members of the delegations and posed for official photos. The meeting kicks off the bilateral agenda between Brazil and Spain, with a focus on political and economic cooperation.

(April 16) in Barcelona, ​​at the beginning of a 6-day trip through Europe. In addition to Spain, the president will go to Germany and then to Portugal. The Brazilian government’s expectation is to sign bilateral agreements and seek Spanish support for the country’s intentions in the Mercosur-European Union agreement. The provisional entry into force of the treaty, scheduled for May 1st, is treated as a political and economic asset during the trip.

The president remains in Spain until Saturday (18 April). On the date, he participates in the forum “Defending Democracy against Extremism”, a meeting that brings together 10 to 15 leaders from countries that have faced episodes of political radicalization. Representatives from Ireland, Slovakia, South Africa, Ghana and Malaysia are confirmed, as well as names such as Cyril Ramaphosa (South Africa), Gustavo Petro (Colombia) and Claudia Sheinbaum (Mexico).
